Disease 1: Ostentation

Ostentation (or showing off) is a very destructive disease of the heart.  In people's attempts to impress others, they in turn lie to themselves.  They're hearts become diseased with falsehood and hypocrisy.  Many of us reach a state of denial where we have a very hard time accepting that we are not sincere in our actions.

To be sure, ask yourself if what you do in private reflects what you do when people will notice.  If you aren't sure about your actions, you can use some methods to treat this disease.

Donate money ANONOMOUSLY.
When praised, do not respond. (to avoid taking it to heart)
Keep whatever praises others make private.
Keep other accomplishments private.
Increase private acts of worship.  (especially dhikr and tahhajud/qiyaam ul-layl)
